“It is time to get the feds out of the classroom and terminate the Department of Education.”
Those were the words of Congressman Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, when he introduced a new bill this week to completely abolish the Department of Education.
The bill is HR 899 and it’s been assigned to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
Today I’ll tell you why this is a great bill for America… why it is not the least bit controversial… and I’ll let you know how you can support it.
We are dumbing ourselves down by allowing the feds and the teachers’ unions to control all local education in America.
We have devolved from a nation that once put a man on the moon to a nation that can only put a man in the girls’ bathrooms in public schools.
Just look at California as one example of this dumbing down.
When I was a kid growing up in California, we all took what was known as the Iowa Test or the Iowa Basic Skills Test.
Back in those days, California had the highest test scores in the nation. A big part of the reason for that was LOCAL CONTROL.
Bureaucrats in Washington, DC all the way on the other side of the country were not telling local schools what to teach or how to teach it.
Standards for education were much higher.
Today, California ranks 45th out all 50 states.
Only 27% of kids in California are able to pass a test at or above their grade level.
From first to 45th, and almost 75% of the kids can’t read or do math.
This is outrageous and the reason for it is the Department of Education in Washington, DC which enriches and empowers the public sector labor unions in education.
Do you know why the Department of Education exists?
President Jimmy Carter created the Department of Education in 1980 so that the teachers’ unions would support his reelection.
Ronald Reagan called it “Carter’s Bureaucratic Boondoggle” and Reagan campaigned on a promise to abolish the Department of Education… and he whipped Carter.
Reagan’s bill never gained any traction in Congress unfortunately, although he did write and submit the bill for consideration.
No one loses any sleep over those federal departments being abolished. And the only people who will miss the Department of Education are the teachers’ unions and the Democrat Party.
Listen to this, and I’ll bet you’ve never heard this story before.
Barack Obama personally supported school choice.
This story is in National Review and I’ve posted a link to it on our Action Page today.
Back in 2008, Barack Obama gave a speech to group of Wall Street financiers.
Obama said he was sick of the bureaucratic state of American education, and declared that he was close to publicly endorsing a nationwide school-choice program.
The Wall Street money-men were excited about this, but Obama ended up running in the opposite direction.
He gutted the school choice program in Washington, DC that primarily benefitted black families.
Obama did this because the teachers’ unions poured money into his campaign and endorsed him over Hillary Clinton.
Think about that for a moment…
The teachers’ unions wield more power and influence over the Democrat Party than Wall Street!
If you want get special interest money out of politics then you need to support this bill to abolish the Department of Education.
